P&S Award Selection Criteria Example (for the Excellence Award)

Instructions to Nominate:

The Professional and Scientific Excellence Award recognizes and honors professional and scientific staff members who have been employed by Iowa State University for at least ten years and who have achieved excellence in their respective fields. Three $1,500 awards are presented annually with grants from the ISU Foundation.

Submit a maximum of three letters of endorsement, including at least one letter from an individual outside the nominee's department and a letter of comment from a supervisor. Include a paragraph about the nominee to be used in the awards program at the Convocation. Since the following criteria are used when reviewing the nominations, it is important to attach supportive information (if applicable) and to include dates when possible.

  • Professional contributions/service within the university (to the university, department or unit, other departments or units, and the P&S system)
  • Professional organizations and positions held
  • Evidence of career progress (promotions and educational advancements)
  • Professional recognitions/contributions beyond the university (community, state, regional, national, international, committees, publications, and recognitions)
  • List of publications, papers, and patents
  • Nominee's resume or vita

Score Sheets for Ranking Nominations

The score sheet used to rank the nominations for the P&S Excellence Award described above is available online. It is a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet.

Score sheets for other awards reviewed by the P&S Awards Committee also are available as Excel spreadsheets:

Regents Award for Staff Excellence
Carroll Ringgenberg Award
P&S Outstanding New Professional Award
P&S CYtation Award

All six areas of P&S are represented on the committee, as required by P&S Council by-laws.

Award packets are duplicated as needed and provided directly to members of the Awards Committee for individual review. No discussion takes place before individual rankings are made.

Individual rankings are combined into an overall score. Then the total Awards Committee discuss their rankings and overall ranking before making final decisions.

Score sheets have been developed to assist in evaluating each award area. The score sheet is set up to reflect the award criteria listed on the award nomination form. For example, the award criteria for the P&S Excellence Award are at left.
