The P&S Council is a representative body elected by, and responsible to, Professional & Scientific employees at Iowa State University. The Council consists of approximately 40 members, including six officers, elected from Academic & Research, Business & Finance, IPRT/Ames Lab, Extension, President’s Office, and Student Affairs (or 1 representative for every 75 P&S employees). The Council has several standing committees that serve specific needs: Peer Advisory, Policies & Procedures, Compensation & Benefits, Retention & Recruitment, Representation, Awards, University Planning & Budget, and Communications. Full P&S Council meetings are held monthly and are open to all employees.

What does the P&S Council do?

Studies issues affecting the P&S employee base and presents proposals to the ISU Administration.

Arranges Open Forums so all members of the University Community can learn about a wide variety of ISU related issues

Coordinates P&S Awards:

  • P&S Excellence - cash award, selection by the President and Executive Vice President and Provost
  • Superior Service - selection by the Alumni Association
  • Regents Award for Staff Excellence, selection by the President, EVVP and Board of Regents
  • Carroll Ringgenberg Award - cash award, selection by the VP for Business and Finance
  • P&S Outstanding New Professional - cash award, selection by the President and EVPP
  • P&S CYtation Award - selected semi-annually by the P&S Council
  • P&S Scientific Research Award - cash award, selection by committee named by EVPP

Promotes Tuition Reimbursement Grants:

  • Pays for up to three credits per semester at ISU tuition rate
  • How to apply - online through AccessPlus, deadline approximately one week prior to start of the semester
  • Coursework does not have to be from Iowa State University
  • Must achieve a C in undergraduate coursework and B- in graduate coursework for reimbursement

Promotes Professional Development Grants:

  • Training for job activities/equipment, short courses associated with conferences, research activities, and site visits
  • Grants vary, from $100 - $400
  • Grants usually have employee, department, and grant each paying one-third of the total cost.
