MAKE A DIFFERENCE
_____________________________
During these challenging fiscal times, it's critical that P&S
staff interests continue to be well represented on campus. You
CAN make a difference: Run for election to the P&S Council,
nominate a colleague, or volunteer to serve on a committee as
a non-council member. Your participation in university decisions
will affect the personal and professional lives of all P&S
staff at Iowa State.
P&S Council Membership
Nominations are open until Feb. 20
for 16 open seats on the P&S
Council 2004-2005. To nominate yourself or a colleague, see the
council's election website:

Top Reasons to Serve on the P&S Council
- Help influence university policy
and represent your colleagues.
- Routinely interact with and
provide input to key offices within the university (President's
Office, Office of the Provost, Board
of Regents, Human Resource Services, etc.) through face-to-face
meetings, council resolutions, and committee work.
- Serve on
committees that promote or enhance P&S compensation
and benefits issues, professional development opportunities,
awards, recruitment and retention grants, and P&S policies
and procedures.
- Help keep your peers on campus informed about
issues that affect them.
16 More Reasons to Serve on the Council

Committee Membership
There is no better way to understand the
inner workings of Iowa State University than to serve on a P&S
Council committee. Committee work is rewarding, challenging --
and sometimes controversial.
To participate on a committee as a non-council member, contact
Council President Kevin Kane, kkane@iastate.edu.

New Prescription Drug Coverage
The P&S Council's Compensation & Benefits
Committee has asked the university's benefits office to track
out-of-pocket
costs for employees under the new (2004) prescription drug plan
compared to out-of-pocket costs under the old plan. The goal
is to determine if the change in co-pay results in staff discontinuing
prescription medications.

Alternatives to Layoffs
At its December 2003 meeting, the P&S Council approved
a resolution encouraging the administration to consider early
retirement
options whenever possible if, due to additional budget cuts,
P&S staff reductions must be considered
