May 2 Open Forum to Showcase R&R Projects
The May 2 Open Forum, sponsored by the Professional & Scientific
Council, will showcase innovative and successful projects that
received 2007-2008 Retention & Recruitment Grants. This is
also an opportunity to learn more about how staff can become part
of the university’s retention and recruitment efforts for
students.
The forum will be held at the Hixson-Lied Student Success Center
on Friday, May 2, in the classroom facilities. The poster session
will begin at 11:30 a.m. so that attendees will have time to visit
with project grant recipients before the panel discussion. Featured
projects include Science Bound Student Ambassador Program, Opening
Doors to a World of Adventures, DMCA Outreach Initiative, 4-H ISU
Recruitment Trip, and Exploring Agriculture and Iowa State University.
A panel discussion, "Retention Through Innovation and Collaboration",
will begin at 12:10 p.m. and includes Dr. John H. Schuh, distinguished
professor of educational leadership and Interim Director of the
Research Institute for Studies in Education; Mary Jo Gonzales,
Associate Dean of Students and Director of the Academic Success
Center; and Tom Brumm, faculty adviser and University Academic
Advising Committee Co-Chair.
Light refreshments will be served and those attending also will
be eligible for door prizes.
P&S Council Awards Recruitment
and Retention Grants -- 2007-2008
The Professional and Scientific Council's Retention and Recruitment
Committee has awarded 17 grants totaling $44,885 to support retention
and recruitment efforts. Grant funds will be used for innovative
purposes within the context of the University's commitment to retention
and recruitment. P & S employees are eligible to submit proposals
each year in June. The call for proposals identifies several priority
considerations in the funding process; programs must impact retention
and recruitment of students and specifically address one or more
goals of ISU's 2005-2010 Strategic Plan.

an opportunity for an informal luncheon with members of the Board
of Regents on April 21.
Regents who participated were board president David Miles, Robert
Downer, Michael Gartner and Rose Vasquez. The luncheon was hosted
by ISU President Gregory Geoffroy at the Knoll and also included
a delegation from the ISU Faculty Senate.

Next P&S Council Meeting May 2
The next P&S Council meeting is at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 2,
2008 in the Memorial Union Pioneer Room.
Council business will include election of a secretary and two
vice presidents for the coming year, and the Council is expected
to consider a motion on the implementation of recommendations of
the Towers Perrin consulting firm contained in the Iowa State University
Competitive Cash Compensation Analysis Summary Report.
Election update:
Sara Gatchel was elected to a seat on the Council representing
President’s Office staff in a runoff election held at the
end of March. The runoff was necessary because of a tie vote during
the regular election earlier in March. She will be seated at the
June 5 Council meeting along with nine other members who will begin
new terms on the council.
