P&S COUNCIL NEWS

New Council Members Installed

P&S Council welcomed 14 new members at its annual transition meeting held June 7. The new members and three returning incumbents were elected in campus-wide voting by P&S staff conducted in March.

Council members usually serve three-year terms unless shorter terms are necessary to balance Council rotation, and they can serve two consecutive terms. Those installed in June are, by area of representation:

Academic and Research -- Dave Biedenbach (2-year term), Suzanne Coburn Van Veen, Kevin DeRoos, John Dickerson, Valerie Evans, Emily Hurm, David J. Meisinger and Brian Trewyn (2-year term).
Business and Finance -- Amy DeLashmutt (2-year term), Roger Graden (re-elected), Mike Hamilton (2-year term), and Pat Strah.
Extension -- Del Marks and Dale Miller (both re-elected)
IPRT/Ames Lab -- Mark Clarridge and Trevor M. Riedemann
Student Affairs -- Mike Noreen

The new members join 19 carry-over Council members whose terms expire in 2008 or 2009. A complete Council roster, including carry-over members, is available online at http://www.pscouncil.iastate.edu/Members08.html

New Council Officers Installed

New officers, who were elected at Council meetings earlier in the year, also were installed at the June meeting. They are Dan Woodin, president; Lynne Mumm, president-elect; Pam Owenson, secretary; Jason Follett, executive committee member-at-large/campus liaison; and Kevin Kane, executive committee member-at-large/university planning and budget. Woodin, who also served as Council president in 2005-2006 and two terms in 1992-1994, replaces Cathy Good who will remain on the Council as immediate past president.

Committee Chairs Appointed

At the top of the agenda for the new P&S Council president when he or she takes over each year is the formation of the Council's standing committees. These committees, established in the Council's by-laws,
conduct the Council's business throughout the year. Council members were asked to indicate their committee preferences and whether they are willing to serve as chair of one of the eight standing committees.

The committees and their chairs for the coming year are Awards, Karla Mae Elling; Communications, Del Marks; Compensation and Benefits, Trevor Riedemann and Virgil Schmitt; Policies and Procedures, Kevin
DeRoos; Representation, Mike Hamilton; Retention and Recruitment, Camille Sloan Schroeder; Peer Advisory, Pam Owenson; and University
Planning and Budget, Kevin Kane.

The work of the committees is overseen by the Council's Executive Committee which consists of the five elected officers. Chairs of each of the standing committees attend the monthly Executive Committee meetings. The Council's immediate past president also serves on the Executive Committee.

Information on each committee and a list of members is available under the "Committees" link at the left edge of the P&S Council's web page: http://www.pscouncil.iastate.edu/. Committee membership is open to P&S staff who are not Council members.

President to Fill Council Vacancy

Confirmation of Chad Olson as a new Student Affairs Council member to fill a vacancy will be on the agenda for the Council's meeting on Aug. 3. The appointee will take the place of Andy Alt who was elected
in 2006 to represent Student Affairs staff.

Alt, who has been assistant director for judicial affairs in the Dean of Students Office, is leaving ISU to become Assistant Dean of Students at Bowling Green State University in Ohio.

Council vacancies are filled by the Council president with the approval of the Council. Appointees serve until the following June and are eligible to seek election to the seat during the Council's yearly elections in March.

Leadership Retreat

On June 20, twenty-one members of the P&S Council participated in a day-long leadership workshop, entitled "Next Stop: Maximum Leadership." The program, facilitated by Todd McDonald, founder of ATW Training and Consulting, was designed to help participants identify the leadership behaviors a person must develop to improve their leadership effectiveness. Participants were presented with the varying levels of leadership, were asked to assess their level of leadership and begin to understand what it takes to move to the next level.

The morning session was conducted at the State Historical Museum in Des Moines and the afternoon session was conducted at the Iowa Hall of Pride. As part of the program, participants were given the opportunity to take a brief tour of the two facilities. A special thanks goes to Executive Vice President and Provost Betsy Hoffman for funding this event.
