P&S Council to Host Forum on Arming Campus Police Officers

A proposal to allow sworn and certified police officers who work for Iowa's three state universities to carry firearms as standard equipment will be the topic of a special Open Forum sponsored by the P&S Council at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31. The forum will be held in the Pioneer Room at the Memorial Union and it is open to the campus community.

Jerry Stewart, director of public safety at ISU, and Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance, will make a short presentation on the proposal and then take questions from the audience. The issue is expected to be on the agenda for the  Iowa Board of Regents in September, and the ISU P&S Council has been asked to provide input on the proposal.

P&S Council members have received a document prepared for the presidents of the three state universities to present to the Regents, and have been asked to make a recommendation by Sept. 10. The Council is expected to discuss the proposal at its meeting on Sept. 6. The document includes a 9-page letter of recommendation and more than 50 pages of supporting materials describing current policies.

September Open Forum to Feature Executive Vice President Hoffman

Elizabeth Hoffman, Executive Vice President and Provost of Iowa State University, will be the first presenter of the 2007-08 academic year at the noon Open Forum series sponsored monthly by the P&S Council.

Hoffman will discuss the Resource Management Model in the Gallery at the Memorial Union beginning at 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 6. Forum sessions are open to anyone in the campus community, and participants are invited to bring their lunch.

The Council's monthly business meeting is scheduled from 2 to 4 p.m. in the Campanile Room on Sept. 6.

Recruitment and Retention Grants

P&S grants totaling $45,000 will again be awarded in the 2007-08 academic year to assist in the recruitment and retention of students at ISU. Recipients of the first round of awards will be announced in the near future by the P&S Retention and Recruitment Committee. Applications were due in June and the committee review process was conducted in July. Additional information is being collected from some applicants before the awards are announced. Watch for the opportunity to apply for these grants again in the fall semester. Information will be available at the P&S Retention and Recruitement Committee web site: http://www.pscouncil.iastate.edu/RandRCommittee.html

Awards Committee Adds a Co-Chair

Mark Clarridge, who started a three-year term on the P&S Council in June as a representative of Ames Laboratory and Institute for Physical Research and Technology staff, has been appointed co-chair of the Council's Awards Committee. His appointment by Council President Dan L. Woodin was approved at the Council's meeting on Aug. 3.

Clarridge joins Karla Mae Elling in directing the 10-member committee which provides recommendations for several awards presented annually to P&S staff and also administers P&S Awards policy. Clarridge served on the committee as a non-council member prior to being elected to the Council. Additional information is available on the Committee's web site at http://www.pscouncil.iastate.edu/AwardsCommittee.html
