P&S Council to Host Forum on Arming Campus
Police Officers
A proposal to allow sworn and certified police
officers who work for Iowa's three state universities to carry
firearms as standard equipment will be the topic of a special Open
Forum sponsored by the P&S Council at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31. The
forum will be held in the Pioneer Room at the Memorial Union and
it is open to the campus community.
Jerry Stewart, director of public safety at ISU, and Warren Madden,
vice president for business and finance, will make a short presentation
on the proposal and then take questions from the audience. The
issue is expected to be on the agenda for the Iowa Board
of Regents in September, and the ISU P&S Council has been asked
to provide input on the proposal.
P&S Council members have received a document prepared for
the presidents of the three state universities to present to the
Regents, and have been asked to make a recommendation by Sept.
10. The Council is expected to discuss the proposal at its meeting
on Sept. 6. The document includes a 9-page letter of recommendation
and more than 50 pages of supporting materials describing current
policies.

at ISU. Recipients of the first round of awards will be announced
in the near future by the P&S Retention and Recruitment Committee.

from some applicants before the awards are announced. Watch for
the opportunity to apply for these grants again in the fall semester.
Information will be available at the P&S Retention and Recruitement
