Arming Campus Police Officers

On Friday, Aug. 31 the P&S Council hosted an open forum in the Pioneer Room in the Memorial Union discussing a proposal to allow sworn and certified police officers who work for Iowaís three state universities to carry firearms as standard equipment. Jerry Stewart, director of public safety at ISU, and Warren Madden, vice president for business and finance, gave brief presentations on the proposal then took questions from the audience. More than 70 people from the campus community were in attendance. A streaming video of the presentation has been archived on the P&S Council website. Paste the following URL into the Open Location dialog box of your Real Player application [requires RealPlayer*]:

The issue is on the agenda for the Iowa Board of Regents meetings (Sept. 18-19), and the ISU P&S Council was asked to provide input on the proposal. At the Sept. 6 P&S Council meeting, members voted to approve the resolution to arm regents sworn and certified police officers (31 for, 2 against).

Recruitment & Retention Grant Announcements this Fall

Five projects designed to enhance recruitment and retention of students at Iowa State University have been selected as recipients of P&S Retention and Recruitment Grants this Fall:

  • Alternative Breaks Service Trips, proposal submitted by Jennifer Garrett. This program will place students in communities to engage in short-term service during Spring Break and one weekend each semester. Being immersed in a community enables participants to better understand social issues.
  • Expanding Go!, an E-zine to Attract Students to Transportation Careers, proposal submitted by Michele Regenold. This project will expand Go!, an online teen magazine about careers in transportation, by publishing six times in 2007-2008 and by increasing the marketing efforts.
  • PERUSE (Providing Experiences in Research for Undergraduate Students in Engineering), proposal submitted by Nancy Knight. PERUSE will provide opportunity for undergraduate engineering students to work with faculty on research. Studies have documented that such research opportunities not only enhance student success in the academic environment but also contribute significantly to student retention, to successful post baccalaureate employment, and to the likelihood of students enrolling in graduate school.
  • College Financial Success Program, proposal submitted by Greg Forbes. This program will provide students with financial literacy education through in-class instruction and online modules with the goals of reducing student indebtedness, reducing financial distractions from academic pursuits, and increasing persistence.
  • 4-H ISU Recruitment Trip, proposal submitted by Denise Schwab. This recruitment trip will show 4-H'ers what ISU can offer to meet their interests in animal science and veterinary medicine.† They will meet and interact with faculty, staff, and students.

The Retention and Recruitment Grant program is funded by the Office of the Provost and administered by the P&S Retention and Recruitment Committee. The program has distributed $375,000 in the past 13 years. Additional information is available on the committee's web site at:
