Athletics Council

Tonia McCarley, 294-6555

Committee Meeting Date: September 20, 2005

Major agenda items discussed/committee action taken:

  • Introduction of new Council members and guests
  • Athletics Director’s report
  • Faculty Athletics Representative’s report
  • Student-Athlete Advisory Council report
  • Committee assignments for 2005-06
  • Committee and Liaison reports from 2004-05

Potential impact on P&S employees:

The appointment of Jamie Pollard as Iowa State’s new Athletics Director was announced at the September meeting.  As a P&S/contract employee, Jamie will represent our peer group at a highly visible, national level.  From all accounts, he brings to his position a tremendous amount of integrity, professionalism and enthusiasm, which bodes well not just for P&S employees, but for all ISU faculty, staff, students, and alumni.

Also announced at the September meeting were committee assignments for 2005-06.  I have been assigned to the Equity Committee, in particular.  This committee is responsible for monitoring, reporting and making recommendations to the Athletics Council, Athletics Director, and/or President on:  (1) equity issues for women and minority student-athletes and staff; (2) progress on institutional plans to address gender equity and minority opportunities in athletics; and (3) progress evidenced in the Athletics Department’s annual summary report required by the “Equity in Athletics Disclosure Act.”  The Athletics Department’s progress in addressing equity issues carries over to P&S staff insofar as we all benefit from the recruitment, hiring, and/or retention of individuals from underrepresented groups, and moreover, the implementation of fair and equitable compensation policies.  Fair and equitable hiring/compensation practices ensure that the university is a great place to learn and work because they foster an environment in which diversity can thrive.

Next committee meeting date: November 29, 2005
