Lynne Mumm, 294-6339

Committee Meeting Date: March 27, 2006

Major agenda items discussed/committee action taken:

The University Child Care Committee met on Monday to make plans for April, Month of the Young Child. On Monday, April 3, committee members will be presenting green ribbons to friends and allies of young children across campus. More than fifty individuals and offices will receive ribbons, including Dan Woodin and Cathy Good as leaders of P&S Council. UCCC
will also sell kid pins and other mementos in the free speech zone near Parks Library Tuesday through Thursday, April 4-6, from 11:00-1:00 (Inclement weather location: Beardshear Hall).

In addition to green ribbons, recipients of the award received the following letter:

Celebrating April, Month of the Young Child

You have been chosen as a ribbon recipient in the "Green Ribbon Campaign" for April, Month of the Young Child. Your ribbon will be placed on your office door on April 3. We hope to focus public attention on the needs of young children and their families and to recognize the early childhood programs and services that meet those needs. The University Child Care Committee is pleased to honor you as a supporter of University Child Care and
advocate for the needs of ISU families.

The early childhood years (birth through age 8) lay the foundation for children's success in school and later life. The Week of the Young Child is a time to plan how we--as citizens of a community, of a state, and of a nation--will better meet the needs of all young children and their families.

We believe that active outreach and awareness across the ISU community will offer important benefits, such as:

  • involving diverse groups, who might not otherwise be reached, in order to understand student and staff issues and concerns regarding child care;
  • connecting with those involved with recruiting and retaining ISU families with child care information and services on campus and in the community;
  • supporting collaboration among services, agencies, and departments on campus to impact and improve child care opportunities;
  • examining child care services at ISU and recommending new or revised programs and services;
  • and establishing positive relationships among various groups within the community around an issue of importance to all.

ISU's many early childhood professionals work together to improve professional practice and working conditions in early childhood education and build public support for high-quality early childhood education programs. All ISU campus child care centers are accredited by NAEYC, the largest organization of professionals dedicated to improving and promoting
excellence in early childhood programs.

We thank you for your participation in the Fowl Play Fundraiser and other acts of support as friends to Early Childhood Education and Care. If you do not wish to receive a ribbon, please phone Julie Hagen Minnihan at 294-8827.
