University Committee on Child Care

Lisa Lorenzen, 294-0926

Committee Meeting Date: 11/10/2006

Major agenda items discussed/committee action taken:

  • Julia Graden will provide a report at the December 8th meeting as to the UCCC account with the foundation
  • We discussed the current funding sources available to students for daycare costs: CAP, CAPU, CCAMPIS, Fowl Play and State Funds
  • Question was asked if Child Care could be made a Capitol Campaign project; was considered doubtful in today's limited financial standing
  • Julia Graden is still working on updating the information for our website, which also needs to be updated through the provost office
  • HOMEWORK: bring map of campus and mark buildings (and floors) where we think baby changing stations would be beneficial -- Must determine locations to acquire costs so we can start seeking funding sources.
  • Our next big event to plan for will be April, Month of the Young Child, Heather commented that the IEYC Club may be willing and able to help with any initiative we put forward for that month.
  • Note the student, staff names on the routing list, this should be an up to date list of all members!!!!! Yeah!!!!!

Committee's Mission Statement:

Mission
The University Child Care Committee will work with Iowa State University faculty, staff, students, and the Ames community to promote affordable, accessible, quality childcare. The committee works to educate university constituents about the needs of ISU families.

Philosophy
UCCC believes:

  • Child care services and programs should be provided as an integral part of higher education systems.
  • Campus child care programs provide a variety of models designed to meet the educational and service needs of the institution and community at large.
  • The diversity reflected in our services, programs and beliefs enhance the understanding of issues related to children and families.
  • Campus early childhood education and care services serve as models and set standards for the larger community regarding affordable, accessible, and quality care for children.

Statement of Purpose
In order to fulfill its mission and philosophy, UCCC is committed to:

  • Advocate for exemplary, accessible, affordable, quality child care programs, services and facilities to meet the diverse needs of the ISU community.
  • Promote the establishment, maintenance and, when appropriate, the expansion of high quality early childhood education and care programs to enable parents to further their education and be gainfully employed. ( or use these words: recruitment/retention)
  • Advocate for additional recurrent and reliable funding in order to provide accessible, affordable, quality child care facilities and services for the ISU community. (or resources)
  • Foster awareness and appreciation for the diverse needs of children and families through education and public awareness in the ISU community. (communication)
  • Assess current policy, recommend changes and influence future policies affecting children and families of the ISU community. (communication)
  • Be advocates in the field of Early Childhood Education and Care and represent the interests and needs of children and families of the University community.

Mrs. Geoffroy's Involvement with ISU Child Care

To benefit child care, we should continue to keep Mrs. Geoffrey informed and invite her to participate in events that affect child care on campus and with the ISU community. As she has an interest in this initiative and has provided support in the past.
