ISU Retirees Committee

Committee Meeting Date: November 15, 2006

Major agenda items discussed/committee action taken:

The meeting was called to order by Dean Ulrichson at 2:00 p.m.

The eighteen members present included: Ober Anderson, Avis Andre, Dianne Borgen, Jan Breitman, Barbara Brown, Ina Couture, Burt Drexler, Donna Erickson, Alyce Fanslow, Stu Huntington, Jane Lohnes, George McJimsey, Nancy Meredith, Bill Owen, Jen Peters, Jerilyn Rasmussen (her supervisor, Mike Otis) and Dean Ulrichson.

  1. Announcements-
    • The agenda was adopted
    • October 18, 2006 minutes were approved.
  2. University Benefits - Jerilyn Rasmussen introduced her new supervisor, Mike Otis. She and Alyce Fanslow reported that open enrollment for any health insurance changes will end December 4 for Faculty and P & S retirees. There was a one dollar per month error on the dental insurance rates. A correction is being sent out. Retirees with life insurance benefits were reminded to update their beneficiary list if they have not done so in the past five years. The new TIA-CREF Office is now open at 2713 Stange Road ; phone 866-904-7803. Paul Casperson is the local representative.
  3. Treasurer's report -Jan Breitman, Alumni Association Program Director-No report at this time since the new procedures are still being implemented for the coming year.
  4. Standing committee reports
    • Executive - Dean Ulrichson has been researching the benefits available to ISU retirees, such as parking, library use, life insurance benefits, etc. When completed information will be included in the Newsletter and mailings to retirees.
    • Program - George McJimsey- Further information will be included in the next Newsletter for the January to March meetings. Dates are as follows:

    1). October 20 - Norm Rudi, Ames ' Author, will speak on World War II Veterans.
    2). January 19- Burt Drexler - Russian Enamels
    3) February 17-Hilary Seo-Library, Preservation
    4) March 17- Jane Cox- Suffragetes (Carrie Chapman Catt and Lucy Stone).
    5) April 13- Dorothy Schweider-History of Iowa State University .
    6) September 15-George Christenson-Adventures in Photography
    7) October 20-Sheri Kyras- Cy Ride and ISU Transportation,

    • Social - Donna Erickson and Jane Lohnes reported that the Holiday Dinner was a success with 81 paid attendance. The Spring 2007 Picnic will be held May 15 at the Prairie Moon Winery and will include a tour of the vineyards, wine production, and tasting. A box meal will also be included. They are still negotiating the rental rate with the winery. Discussion was held on cost for the event. Moved by Alyce Fanslow and seconded by George McJimsey that the committee be authorized to set cost at $20 per person if needed. Motion carried.
    • Memorial Day Committee-Palmer Holden absent. Dean Ulrichson will serve as Co-Chair of the committee. Facilities have been reserved for next year.
    • ISU Diplomats - Ina Couture reported that use of diplomats has been minimal in recent years. A small committee will be appointed to develop an invitation to all retirees to become diplomats. Department chairs and administrators will be made aware of the program and secure their input for future service opportunities..
  5. Committee Liaison Reports
  6. College for Seniors - Avis Andre reported the four week Winter session will run January 23-February 14, 2007 with eight classes available.
  7. Faculty Senate - Douglas Finnemore was absent, but did e-mail a report to committee members prior to the meeting. Highlights of the report were summarized by Chairman Ulrichson.
  8. ISU Cemetery - Nancy Meredith has volunteered to serve as our representative on this committee.
  9. ISU 150 th Celebration-Jan Breitman, Program Director, will work with Palmer Holden and other committee members in planning a display as a part of Veishea. Committee will meet in December.
  10. ISU Retirees newsletter - Dianne Borgen reported that December 8 is the deadline for the next newsletter.
  11. Special Projects - Dianne Borgen reported that the support staff for the website has been ill and needs additional time for updating the site. Cost for the ISU Cemetery locator board are increasing, but will be kept within the budget.
  12. Old Business- None.
  13. New Business-Chairman Ulrichson will continue his research on the benefits available to ISU retirees.

The next meeting of the Administrative Committee will be at 2:00 p.m. January 17. The Executive Board will meet at 2:00 p.m. on January 10.
