Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) Updates

 

As outlined in the October 20 edition of Inside Iowa State, the updated guidelines of the Fair Labor Standards Act will be taking effect on December 1, 2016. Many of you have likely already discussed this with your supervisor. Your Professional and Scientific Council has been involved in the discussion of the implementation of the new FLSA guidelines and the development of the tools which will be used to track hours worked. If you have questions, you are encouraged to talk with your supervisor. If there are any questions or concerns you do not feel comfortable sharing with your supervisor, please forward them to the Professional and Scientific Council President, Clayton Johnson at cjjohn@iastate.edu 

 

 

November Professional and Scientific Council Seminar Series Event

 

The Vice President for Diversity and Inclusion will update you about efforts and programs i place to improve the University environment. He will discuss the University Strategic Plan and the role Diversity and Inclusion plays within that plan as it shapes the University into the future. You will also learn about resources available to those who want to help make the University a more welcoming place for all.

CYtation Award Nominations are Open!

Deadline is December 1, 2016!

 

 

The following Professional and Scientific Council CYtation Awards are available:

  • CYtation
  • Woodin CYtation
  • Team CYtation
  • Outstanding New Professional and Scientific Council Member CYtation

Who is eligible for the CYtation Award?

 

CYtation Awards are given to individuals who are Professional and Scientific employees. They must be nominated for performing above and beyond the call of duty, and/or doing something extraordinarily well, and/or acting in such a way as to make a very real difference in the institution.

 

Who is eligible for the Woodin CYtation Award?

 

To be eligible for this award, the individual must be a Professional and Scientific employee and must meet the following criteria:

  • Demonstrates exemplary service to Professional and Scientific Council or Professional and Scientific employees
  • Demonstrates willingness to go above and beyond
  • Has a positive attitude, shows true compassion for others, and treats everyone with respect
  • Demonstrates leadership, innovation, and initiative 

 

To be eligible for this award, the individual must be a Professional and Scientific Council member newly elected or newly appointed within 18 months of the beginning of their term.  In addition, the individual must meet the following criteria:

  • Has established a pattern of reliability and responsibility while making a notable difference
  • Fosters cooperation and has strong interpersonal partnerships with fellow Professional and Scientific Council members
  • Exhibits potential for future contributions to Iowa State University

Who is eligible for the Team CYtation Award?

 

The Team CYtation award is given to a team of Professional and Scientific employees. The team must be nominated for performing above and beyond the call of duty, and/or doing something extraordinarily well, and/or acting in such a way as to make a very real difference in the institution. This is intended to be a group award.

Cultivate Your Adventure From Initiating to Innovating

Professional and Scientific Council Professional Development Conference

Save the date for the 2017 Professional and Scientific Council Professional Development Conference at the Scheman Building, Iowa State Center. The Conference will include sessions on leadership, health and wellness, professional resources, and human interactions. The Keynote speaker will be Maura Cullen, one of the foremost authorities on issues of diversity and inclusion. Registration will open in December.

 

 

P&S Staff Spotlights

Tonia Baxter, Chemical and Biological Engineering

 

Tonia Baxter, Academic Adviser II in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering, was the recipient of a 2015 CYtation Award. Tonia joined Iowa State University in May of 2015 and has 18 years of advising experience. Tonia went above and beyond when a combination of circumstances left her as the only academic adviser in the department, just four days after she started her new position. At the time, she single-handedly advised 800 undergraduate students! Learn more about Tonia here
